Water, Land focuses on the speculation and exploration of the assimilation processes and vice versa of Chinese-Americans in Western Cultures, more specifically in the New York City area. It queries the generation in between - those retaining memories of where they are from; who witness the experience of assimilation and dissimilation; who recognize the differences between the traditional and the liberal; who attach to their culture yet grow up in another. The individuality and identity become multifaceted for these first-generation Chinese-Americans. Places that remain at the origin of their journey change as times passes, facilitating an embracement of both decadence and development. This exploration of the different boroughs of New York City where a dense population of Chinese immigrants is present conveys my reflection of a diaristic experience of taking part and witnessing how the Chinese culture spreads, withholds and retains itself.
